Decodable Books for Beginning Readers

Decodable books are stories written with only the letter sounds and word patterns a beginning reader has already learned, so your child can sound out nearly every word on the page. Our decodable library has 119 titles across kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade, each narrated in a real human voice with words that light up as the story is read aloud, so your child can listen, follow, and then read it back.

Why decodables work

A child who is learning to read needs wins they earned themselves. A decodable book is built so those wins keep coming: short words, known patterns, and no surprise vocabulary that forces guessing from the pictures. Every Smart Kidz Club decodable states exactly what it practices, the vowel sound, the patterns (like VC and CVC), and the sight words it allows itself, so a parent always knows what tonight's book is teaching.

Start here: kindergarten decodables (ages 3 to 5)

How to use this list at home

  1. Listen first. Let the narration carry the story once, with your child following the words as they light up.
  2. Read it together. Your child sounds out the words, and you help only when a word truly sticks.
  3. Read it solo. Same book, next night. Repetition at the same level is the method, not a shortcut.
  4. Move up when it is easy. If your child reads a level without effort two nights in a row, the next level is ready.

Questions parents ask us

What is a decodable book, in plain words?

A story a beginning reader can actually decode. The words use only the sounds and patterns the child has been taught, plus a small set of common sight words. Nothing on the page requires guessing.

How are these different from leveled readers?

Leveled readers are sorted by general difficulty and often include words a beginner cannot sound out yet, which pushes guessing from context or pictures. Decodables are sorted by the sounds they practice, and each of ours states its patterns right in the book description.

My child is in kindergarten. Where do we start?

With Pup in the Mud or My Mat, then work through the kindergarten set in any order. At three minutes a book, one or two a night builds the habit without a fight.

Can my child listen before they can read at all?

Yes, and it helps. Hearing a real human voice read the words while they light up on the tablet builds the sound-to-letter map that decoding later depends on. That is the whole point of a read-aloud decodable.

How much does it cost to try?
